Here's what's happening in the industry today:

** Demand for molybdenum is forecast to increase by 4-5%/year, according to the chairman of Adanac Molybdenum Corp.

** Mobile phones continue to grow as a market segment worldwide, Purchasing contends. JPMorgan Chase & Co. reported that it expected worldwide mobile phone shipments to grow by 20% this year--more than expected. Shipments will rise to 1.2 billion units, over previous estimates of about 1.17 billion.

** Contrary to popular suspicion, demand for steel could rise this year susbstantially, according to Purchasing. This improvement will come from end-use markets as industrial products, consumer capital goods, automotive, and energy, the magazine says.

** It's a great time to be a supply-chain professional! Supply chain management (SCM) is at the core of many businesses and the technology is developing at a rapid pace. According to Cambridge, Mass.-based AMR Research, the market for supply chain applications grew 7% in 2006 and is expected to reach $7.9 billion by 2011.

** Glass Fiber Capex Up: AGY has increased production capacity by 50% of its S-2 Glass-brand fiber reinforcements used in the defense and aerospace markets. These materials are used to reinforce the armor on Humvees and other military vehicles.

Our new favorite book!

Check out our pick of the month: Looking for Mr. Goodvendor, by Laura Leff. Ms. Leff has more than a decade of hands-on experience in IT-related Project and Vendor Management in telecommunications, electronics, biotechnology, and retail.  A thought leader in the Vendor Selection and Management arena, her tools and processes have saved companies millions of dollars.  Laura has also authored "Looking for Mr. Goodvendor", a book on Vendor Selection and Management.

Here's an excerpt:

"I once envied my husband’s skills in his career as a chef.  'It’s an art you can apply outside your work.  I’m a Project Manager.  What am I going to do, come home and manage projects?'  Soon afterwards, I came to appreciate that the skills I had learned as a Project Manager were much like the skills I had learned with my Mathematics degree:  it’s a mental dance.  Knowing the basics of the steps, they can be applied to a wide variety of situations."
